THE PAJAMA GAME
The Pajama Game was performed at Weathervane Playhouse in Newark, Ohio from July 2-11, 2015. Director Valerie Accetta wanted to make the show bright and colorful while highlighting the struggles of the working person in 1950's America.
There were several challenges in the sound design for this show. First, we had an eight-piece band with horns and woodwinds that lived upstage center on a platform. Instead of mic'ing these pieces, I needed to figure out a way to sync their sound with the piano that was going through the system. I ended up using an amplifier for the piano and taking another output through the monitors so the actors were in sync with the music and the audience heard all of them at the same time. The result was a lush live band.
Another challenge was the musical number "Hey There." Sid Sorokin (Clay Singer) sings a duet with himself via his dictaphone. Music director Kevin Wines and I worked to record Singer's voice a cappella in the tempo that the song would be performed. I then made it locational to the same area of the stage as his dictaphone. The result was a duet that sounded realistic and on time.
